Valli - La Montagna Cortonese
Vaglie
is an historic centre of the mountains near Cortona setting in
a particular area populated from centuries. The first inhabitants
chosen this area for its strategy position between Arezzo area
and peruginian one.
The name Vaglie comes from the plural form of "valley"
and it is due at its position.
The area was inhabitated in the past as showed by several archaeological
findings and we know that during the medieval age there was an
important castle.
The church is dedicated to San Cristoforo and there is the evidence
of existing in 1330 when was part of the Pieve of Poggioni, located
in the northern part.
In 1898, during the restoration, it was discovered part of old
important frescoes painting San Sebastiano, Maria and San Giacomo,
all dated back around 1400. The church tower dates back to 1670.
In the area of Vaglie it existed a lot of water mills and also
today it is possible to watch the remains.
